El Chontal Ecolodge
Gorgeous Waterfront Property on the Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica

Family Owned Ecolodge

El Chontal’s cabins are literally carved out from the surrounding mangrove forest, using fallen trees and sustainable wood species. Their rustic and unique architecture is rich in design and ingenuity and favors ventilation. The cabins are spotlessly clean and well kept. Beds are firm and comfortable, bathrooms impeccable. At night, a cool breeze and rich jungle sounds from the surrounding forest enter the room.

In addition to our cabins, we offer generous green fields for you to pitch up your tent. Facilities such as toilets and showers are available right next to the camp ground.

The centrally located spacious communal pavilion serves as a meeting place as well as a yoga platform, relaxing area with hammocks and chairs, and presentation area. The waterfront kitchen with all necessary appliances and gas stove is for everyone to use for an additional fee.

Sea Kayaking Trips

About us

El Chontal Ecolodge is an endearing waterfront property in the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica, perfect for quiet, relaxing stays in the midst of pure nature teaming with exotic birds. We offer rustic bungalow style lodging set in a lush tropical environment directly connecting the beautiful Golfo Dulce.

The calm warm waters of the Gulf are home to mangrove wetlands, dolphins, whales, and turtles; excellent sea kayaking conditions! In addition, we welcome you to our home for meals prepared with only the freshest local ingredients.

El Chontal is a small Ecolodge, owned and operated by a local family of four. Doña Azucena, the chef-owner, her husband Don Jorge, and their sons Eric and David.

Eric manages the property together with his father while marine biologist David focuses on keeping track of the Gulf’s dolphin population and monitoring the state of their habitat by means of amphibian biological indicators. To learn more about David’s project, he will be happy to take you on a hiking tour to teach you all about the interconnection between the local ecosystems.

El Chontal Ecolodge is located in the tiny community of Rincon, in the Osa Peninsula, along the dead end road (Route 245) which leads to Puerto Jimenez and eventually to Corcovado National Park (see map below). The “Costa Rican style” address is: 300 meters south of the School of Rincon.

Public buses and flights to Puerto Jimenez leave San Jose 3 times a day.

Please contact us if you like us to arrange domestic flights and/or ground transportation to El Chontal.

We love to welcome you to our tranquil tropical Ecolodge!

Multiday Sea Kayaking Trips

Paddling the Sweet Gulf

Tropical Sea Kayaking trips! In our humble opinion, the Golfo Dulce offers the greatest sea kayaking in Costa Rica. The Gulf, protected from the open Pacific Ocean by the Osa Peninsula provides perfect conditions for paddlers of all ages.

The calm, warm and glass-like waters surrounded by rain forests, protected national parks, and mangrove filled river estuaries are home to all sorts of animals including several species of dolphins. The Golfo Dulce is one out of only three tropical fjords in the world and probably the least known, making it an uncut gem for nature and kayaking enthusiasts.

We’ll be paddling River Estuaries, Mangrove forests, stopping at little islands and tropical beaches, snorkeling coral reefs, and we’ll be crossing the Gulf to spot Dolphins, Turtles, Orcas, and migrating Whales.

Our trips start from El Chontal Ecolodge from where we paddle out and stay at neighboring lodges along the Golfo Dulce such as the off-the-beaten-path Lapamar, and Saladero Ecolodge, only to be reached by water.
